Market Report - August 2023

SUGAR MARKET IN AUGUST

World market sugar prices showed remarkable stability during most of August, varying between USD23.20 and USD24.06 cents/lb in the case of raw sugar, and USD673.20/tonne and USD693.00/tonne in the case of whites. However, in the final days of the month, the apathy of the Northern hemisphere holiday season was replaced by renewed bullishness. Indeed, on August 28th raw sugar spot prices (measured by the ISA Daily Price) broke a psychologically important USD25 cents/lb level but retreated to USD24.84 cents/lb by the end of the month. White sugar dynamics at the end of August displayed a similar behaviour. On August 30th, the ISO White Sugar Price Index reached USD721.75/tonne, a 12-year high, before retreating slightly to USD709.15/tonne on the last day of the month.
