MECAS(25)06 - Industrial and Direct Sugar Consumption - Global Trends and Outlook

This study examines the composition of sugar consumption across 19 countries and the European Union between 2014 and 2023, focusing on the distinction between direct household use and industrial applications. Drawing on data submissions from national authorities and industry associations, the analysis reveals significant diversity in consumption patterns that vary considerably by region and development status.

The research identifies several distinct consumption profiles, from markets where direct consumption remains dominant to those where industrial applications prevail. While some countries follow expected developmental consumption trajectories, others demonstrate unexpected patterns that challenge conventional assumptions about sugar market structure. The study also explores shifting trends within industrial usage categories, particularly in the beverage sector where notable changes occurred in several markets.

Statistical analysis indicates that economic development alone does not determine consumption structures, with cultural preferences, policy environments, and food system characteristics playing crucial roles in shaping how sugar enters the food chain. These findings provide valuable insights for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers interested in understanding the complex dynamics driving global sugar demand.
